History

The Glenmorangie distillery was founded in 1843. Glenmorangie is Gaelic for Glen of Tranquility. Situated in Tain, in the Northern Highlands of Scotland, the 'Sixteen Men of Tain' see to the perfect production of all single malts with a continuous outstanding quality and a complex but harmonious caleidoscope of flavours. Glenmorangie has its roots in Ross-shire, here the Picts ruled from 297 to 843 AD. A slightly mysterious people, of whom much remains unknown. They are rumoured to have been capable, intelligent, strong, proud and confident. Their legacy consists mostly of beautifully shaped and complexely crafted metals and stone symbols, like the majestic Cadboll Stone at a walking distance of Glenmorangie House. The bottom part of this stone perfectly symbolizes the caleidoscopic complexity of our whisky and is such honored in the brand signature. Glenmorangie whisky has been a sought-after whisky for centuries because of its perfection of knowledge, its pursuit of a good mixture of innovation and tradition and its distinguishing production process: 1. Distilled in the tallest stills in Scotland (5.14 metres). These ex-gin stills are noticeably longer than the traditional plump whisky stills. Only the lightest and most pure vapours rise all the way to the top and find their way into the distillate. The rougher elements stay behind, resulting in a sophisticated complexity. The Parisian parfumis Christian St. Rocher has discovered an extraordinary amount of 26 different aroma's in Glenmorangie Original. 2. With mineral rich water from our own Tarlogie Springs It takes the water approximately 100 years to bubble up to the surface through layers of sandstone, in the meantime gaining a unique rich mineral composition, whereas the most Scottish waters are quite mineral poor. 3. Matured in ex-bourbon casks of the best American white oak. These casks are only used twice to optimise the influence of the wood on the taste of the whisky. The first fill gives the spirit rich, sweet, vanilla tones. The second fill adds mores complex, floral elements. 4. Glenmorangie's unrivaled reputation in wood finishing. Glenmorangie was the first in the industry to present special Wood Finishes in the 90s. And our current three 'Extra Matured' expressions have won several international awards again in the past year.
