Sweet and fruity with only a hint of smoke to start. Medicinal and peaty notes – bandages and TCP – build behind the sweetness, with prickly spice and dark chocolate flashes. The fruit is definitely the star, with apples, pears and bananas roasted in the embers of a barbecue.
Thick, sweet and syrupy in texture, with ashy smoke, medicinal peat, prickly spice and dark chocolate supporting the sweetness. On top are layers of fruit and toffee – apples, orange and a hint of lychee.
Day-old fireplaces, filled with peat and wood ash, fade and sweeten, revealing apple tarte Tatin.
Peaty whisky isn’t all about smoke. As the spirit matures, the smokiness develops, creating very different flavours. At this distillery, the most famous result is tropical fruit, and Lp3 is a marriage of two vintages, selected to maximise the fruitiness.
