Port Charlotte Pl4 - Elements of Islay
Review by Elements of Islay
- Nose
Hugely fruity – almost like an Irish pot-still whiskey to start. Sweet banana, sour apple, barely-ripe pineapple and crunchy pears are drizzled with a sweet and savoury barbecue sauce.
- Palate
Toffee sweetness is quickly tempered by sour fruit and hot cinnamon. Sweet cream and tropical fruit salad develop, mingling with autumn leaves and pungent peat smoke. As the sweetness fades, dark and earthy chocolate notes appear.
- Finish
Mint, menthol and freshly cut grass fade to rye crispbread and chocolate, with aniseed ball spice and freshness.

-
Despite using Victorian equipment and old-fashioned techniques, this distillery isn’t afraid to experiment. As such, some casks have a very different character to the official releases – Pl4 is one of them, combining heavy smoke with flavours more usually found in the distillery’s unpeated whiskies.
