Port Ellen Pe4 - Elements of Islay
Review by Elements of Islay
- Nose
Crushed seashells, sweet flowers, singed lime peel and rich earthy notes jump out of the glass, with darker dried fruit and muddy peat slowly developing.
- Palate
The spirit is thick and oily and there’s more smoke than the nose suggests – seaside bonfires and burning autumn leaves are joined by spiced rhubarb, vanilla custard and sweet fruit.
- Finish
Sooty and smoky, with lingering spice.
- Note
-
Returning to a more full-bodied style of whisky from this closed distillery, Pe4 was matured in a refill sherry butt. It carefully balances the distillery’s coastal character with elegant cask influence to produce something that takes the best from both worlds.
