The story of Jameson

« This story is also available in Dutch »

Founded in Dublin in 1780

In 1780, John Jameson laid the foundation for his whiskey in Dublin, which would become the world's best-selling Irish whiskey. His motto was “Sine Metu” which means fearless and is still written on every bottle of Jameson. In order to produce the most refined Irish whiskey, he encouraged local farmers to grow the best quality barley. Investments were made in only the finest barrels and its employees were among the best paid in the region. It was not until 1968 that the first bottle of whiskey was introduced under the John Jameson label.

The ingredients

Jameson Irish Whiskey is made with pure water and a combination of malted and unmalted barley. During the process, the malted barley or malt is dried by warm air, which means that no smoke is used in the process or in the final product.

Triple distillation

One of the secrets of whiskey making lies in the slow, triple distillation in copper pot stills. This method gives the whiskey its smoothness and round flavor. Irish whiskeys are triple distilled (unlike Scotch whiskeys, which are normally produced with a double distillation and most Bourbons, which are only distilled once). It is this process that creates the uniqueness of Irish whiskeys. Jameson is an exceptionally smooth whiskey, with hints of spice, sherry and wood.

Jameson today

Today Jameson Irish Whiskey is produced by Irish Distillers, a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard based in Cork, in the south of Ireland. Jameson is available worldwide and has become the no 1 Irish whiskey. “Not all of our customers know Ireland, but they all have an idea of the culture and values it represents,” explains Peter O'Connell, Irish Distillers International Sales and Marketing Director. If something is Irish, it is genuine, friendly and cozy. Qualities you can still find in Dublin's trendy cafes and bars. And of course in Jameson Irish Whiskey!

Maturation

The smooth, sweet taste of Jameson Irish Whiskey is attributed to the time the "spirit" is allowed to age in American and Sherry oak barrels. These are stored for many years in dark, aromatic warehouses. Jameson is known as a 'soft' whiskey. But other whisk (e) ys are also soft. “What's so special about Jameson is the combination of ingredients, distillation and maturation,” explains Peter O'Connell. The relaxed and open style - the family motto is "Sine metu" (no fear) makes Jameson a friendly, confident whiskey.
