Geur:
Sherry (dried fruits - raisins, dates, prunes), cinnamon and nutmeg, orange zest, burnt caramel, chocolaty and leathery notes, wood. Water opens fruitiness in a form of plums and overripe pears, honey notes appear too.
Smaak:
Peppery, medium-sweet, with rather sharp alcohol kick, again nutmeg, dark chocolate, liquorice, blueberry pie, quite vivid oak.
Afdronk:
Medium-long, softly woody, walnut shells, old leather, herbs.
Conclusie:
Decent whisky, pleasantly sherried and with good balance. It doesn’t have a great complexity and shows rather typical sherry-matured character but it’s totally good as for 10 yo expression. The only problem is that alcohol integrated very poorly. Even diluted to about 43-45% it still has a very sharp alcohol punch. Otherwise it’s a good buy for the asked price.

Geur:
Smoky (quite aggressively), with bonfire and rubber notes. After a while fruity aromas penetrate through the smoke: light sherry with raisins and dried apricots, some yellow pears, light burnt caramel notes along with some honey, quite vivid minerality with wet chalky and sandy motives. Also light maltiness and spiciness (nutmeg) can be noticed. Light woody tones develop later. Some fusel oil notes can be felt after a while.
Smaak:
Spicy (pepper mix, nutmeg), tad salty with very light bitterness. Strong smoky notes with coastal influence (seaweed, wet stones, mussels, iodine). Menthol, grapefruit peel, malty notes, some damp wood.
Afdronk:
Long, sooty, tad salty and peppery, drying to the end, with some sweetness, maltiness and mild oaky notes.
Conclusie:
Quite a good whisky, rather pleasant but showing its youthful character on all tasting stages. Balanced, quite heavily smoky, with a light but noticeable sherry influence. In my opinion 2-3 more years in wood might improve the quality of this expression drastically but here we have what we have. However, the undeniable plus of this whisky is its price.

Geur:
Fruity (apples, unripe bananas), tad buttery, some vegetable oil (refined corn oil?), malty, slightly dusty, dark caramel, a bit of sour dough, some herbal notes, light chalky minerality, bitterish oaky nuances. Water highlights oiliness and damp moss feeling.
Smaak:
Slightly sweet, punchy, with some hot peppers like chili, bready, malty, light minerality, oatmeal, eastery notes
Afdronk:
Rather long, slightly astringent, horseradish, malt, bread, salty and mineral
Conclusie:
Very nice single malt, quite complex and different from a typical profile. Although it’s just 8 yo, the youthfulness is totally absent here. The difference is clearly defined by a barley sort and this experiment (if we can call it that) is totally successful.

Smaak:
Peppery, mineral (earth, wet stones, salty notes), coastal (clams, fresh seaweed, iodine), smoked ham, light farmy notes, cold aches, some berry notes
Afdronk:
Long, sweetish, sooty, earthy, salty and winey notes, drying at the end
Conclusie:
Nice whisky, superbly balanced and very coastal and fruity. Being very quaffable, this whisky boasts a moderate price tag. A must have for smoky lovers

Geur:
Bright and fruity, lemon juice, yellow apples, burnt brown sugar, gooseberries, grassy motives, winey notes, vanilla, a hint of malt and wood. Water releases a lot of fruity notes (pears, kumquats, yellow plums), amplifies caramel, vanilla and winey notes
Smaak:
Sour notes, some ground peppers, lemon curd dessert, malt, apple mash, some oak at the end
Afdronk:
Short to medium, tad sweet, nutty, with citrus zest and tender oak mix
Conclusie:
Nice whisky, light and fruity, superbly balanced. Winey influence is obvious but not very strong: it just adds some nuances to a beautiful ex-bourbon maturation. This expression isn’t really complex as for 17 years maturation, but is very tasty and quaffable. The only obstacle to a perfect summer daily daram is its price

Fresh, tad sweet, citruses, salty caramel, mineral chalky notes, very light smoke, a hint of farmyard, green apples, nutmeg, leathery notes. Water releases more fruits: apples and pomelos
Smaak:
Oily, peppery, waxy, mineral and earthy, prominent wood, fruity side comes with sultanas and apple mash, unripe red currants, a bit of vanilla together with caramelized lemon zest
Afdronk:
Quite long, slightly sooty, salty notes, some leathery motives, a touch of oak
Conclusie:
Very nice whisky, perfectly balanced and dangerously quaffable. Fresh fruitines is beautifully interlaced with minerality and tender smokiness. Being reasonably priced, this expression is one of the best whiskies available on the market in its class

Very fresh and vivid, barbeque smoky with cold ashes, fruity (green apples, lemon), some vanilla, maritime feeling (brine, mussels, kelp), creamy with sweet notes
Smaak:
Tad sweet with pomelo infusion, very coastal with salty notes, lemon zest, smoky motives: charcoal, bonfire, smoked oysters. A hint of mild oaky bitterness
Afdronk:
Long, slightly drying, sweetish with citruces and smoky/salty notes
Conclusie:
A very nice expression, perfectly balanced and very vivid. Elegant smokines along with the prominent fruitines - everything points to Caol Ila. It lacks complexity but you don’t really want to have it here. Fairly priced and very quaffable - it has a strong potential to be a perfect daily dram

Excellent ex-bourbon nose: fresh, vivid, with tons of lemons seasoned with vanilla. Also green apples and some pear notes.. Soft smoke, light woody notes with some minerality, light grassy motives. Light spiciness in a form of peppers
Smaak:
Peppery (ground black pepper), tad sweet, apple mash, barley cereals, some herbal notes, light saltiness, iodine, soot, lemon zest
Afdronk:
Quite long, beautifully woody with some bitterness, cold ashes, nutty feeling, sweet lemon curd with vanilla touch
Conclusie:
Excellent whisky especially considering the price. Balanced, tasty, with nice fruits-smoke integration, it shows the best sides of the ex-bourbon maturation. Complexity is missing but this isn’t what you’re looking for here. A nice daily dram option for peat lovers

Edradour 10 year old 2010/2020 cask 116

Signatory - The Un-Chillfiltered Collection
8.3 (1)
Geproefd op:

Geur:
Cinnamon and cloves, sherry, dried fruits with domination raisins, caramel, creamy and oaky notes, mix of sweet orchard berries, orange peel, a hint of old leather
Smaak:
Tad sweet, peppery, astringent and quite bitter, with some nuts and dried fruits, liquorice, oak
Afdronk:
Short, sweetish, tad nutty and leathery, berries marmalade, woody notes
Conclusie:
This expression immediately became a hit right after its release. The main reason for that is the color, I guess. However, the cask, which gave this wonderful dark color, was very active if not aggressive. Because of that the balance was shifted to the oaky side and the whisky became very astringent and quite bitter. Otherwise it's quite OK but not really my cup of tea. Beginners, beware!

Geur:
Smoky at the beginning but not too much. After it calms down, the dram shows nice creamy notes with plenty of berries: blackberry, cherry, a hint of strawberry. Nice sweet vanilla and slightly burnt caramel. Later come winey and nutty tones along with some lemon juice. Mild cocoa and black pepper feeling. Water opens up fruitiness (yellow pears and citruces), intensifies vanilla and releases some malty notes
Smaak:
Quite dry and rather punchy with ginger and peppers, smoky and tad ashy, quite mineral with strong coastal influence (salt, brine, wet stones). After some dilution it gets fruitier with some sour orchard berries (red currants and gooseberries) and rather astringent. Smoky components continue with some bitterness appearing later
Afdronk:
Long, dry, smoky with cold ashes, some nuttiness with noticeable bitterness, menthol and some farmy notes
Conclusie:
Surprisingly good release especially considering several previous weak and indistinct releases like Drum and Grooves. Rather mild (as for Ardbeg) smoke integrated with a good dose of berries and quite obvious winey influence. Even noticeable bitterness in the aftertaste didn’t bother me too much but instead it felt like a part of the total composition. Apparently Bill Lamsden still has some fuel in his tank :)

Big Peat 27 year old 1992/2019 The Black Edition

Douglas Laing - The Vintage Series
8.7 (1)
Geproefd op:
27-8-2020
Geur:
Softly smoky, creamy, somewhat mineral (earth and wet chalk), fruity (apricots, peaches), some vanilla pastry, a touch of menthol, barley notes, gentle woodiness in the background
Smaak:
Slightly sweet, peachy, slightly salty, orange zest, a good dose of ground peppers, blackberry jam, charred oak, smoked ham, drying woodiness at the end
Afdronk:
Rather long, tad leathery, fruity, smoky, getting dry quite soon with some nutty notes at the end
Conclusie:
Very good blended malt, superbly balanced and tasty. Light minerality, smokiness, fruitiness - all the best sides of Islay malts are here. However, it lacks the complexity and individuality. Not the whisky I will remember after a while, unfortunately.

Creamy, slightly sweet, yellow apples, honey, sweet gooseberries, malty notes, wet wood, winey motives, a hint of green pepper, some butter croissant notes after adding water
Smaak:
Tad sweet with a pinch of ground pepper, apple mash, sour berries mix, toffee, rather bitterish oak
Afdronk:
Dried apple fruitiness with some nutty feeling, rather dry, astringent, noticeably bitter
Conclusie:
Quite disappointing whisky as for this age. Flat, wood-driven, rather bitter in the taste and aftertaste. This expression’s strongest side is its nose: creamy and pleasant. Unfortunately from this tasting stage everything gradually goes down.

The Maltman 16 year old 2002/2019 cask 1632

The Maltman - Secret Speyside
9.1 (1)
Geproefd op:

Geur:
Sweet and very creamy, with a bin of dried fruits (prunes, figs, apricots, sultanas), burned caramel, buckwheat honey, a drop of a furniture polish, light oaky motives. Light spiciness in terms of cinnamon and cloves along with roasted almonds. A hint of menthol, some old leather notes. Caramelized orange zest. Water opens up notes of eucalyptus and sandalwood.
Smaak:
Sweet and spicy (ginger and nutmeg). Vanilla fudge, orange marmalade, fresh green melon, dark chocolate with roasted hazelnuts, some cough medicine (with eucalyptus), espresso notes followed by light oaky notes.
Afdronk:
Medium long quite drying and adstringent at the beginning, then sweet with leathery and tobacco notes, nutty and creamy.
Conclusie:
Excellent whisky, very tasty and balanced. Heavily sherried but still the distillery caracter can be noticed: light and creamy. What could it be? Maybe Macallan or Longmorn? I cannot say. Whatever is the real distillery behind the word “secret”, this is a really lovely and highly recommendable expression.

Spirituous at the beginning, after a while becomes sweet, fruity (apricots, yellow pears), somewhat nutty (raw almonds), vanilla, caramelized lemon zest, freshly cut grass, light woody notes. Water opens fruit caramel and some waxy notes.
Smaak:
A bit sweet with a hint of spices (ginger and white pepper), fruity (apple mash and dried pears), vanilla pastry, gooseberry jam, grapefruit juice, light oaky bitterness.
Afdronk:
Medium-long, sweetish, with pleasant nuttiness, caramelized orange peel, gooseberry jam again.
Conclusie:
Decent whisky, quite balanced and pleasant enough. However, on its full strength this dram is rather spirituous and harsh so water is a must. Reasonably priced, it might be a good daily drink but probably not for everyone due to its asperity.

Afdronk:
Medium-long, smoky, earthy, peppery, with notes of old leather and green tea
Conclusie:
Nice whisky but a kind of disappointment for this age. Quite simple, complexity is basically missing. Also it is quite smoky for the age. However, superbly balanced and very quaffable: creamy and somewhat fruity. Rather overpriced for this quality.

Smoke, creamy barley, some fusel oils, pears, menthol, vanilla, metallic notes, caramel. With water smoke turns to soot, farmyard notes appear too in addition to fruit candies
Smaak:
Neat: Sweet, oily, oaky, peppers and apple mash, “unhidden” alcohol. Diluted: more fruits (apples, pears), smoked bacon, bitter herbal cough medicine, gooseberry jam, oaky notes
Afdronk:
Long, sweetish, sooty and tad peppery and astringent
Conclusie:
Quite interesting release from Kilkerran. Punchy on the full strength, it better serves diluted. The balance is good but the young nature is very obvious. Sherry influence can barely be noticed. The bottomline: simple young whisky with good potential to develop.

Creamy, sweetish, softly smoky, yellow overripe pears, sultanas, dried apricots, some malty notes, vanilla, smoked bacon, sweet orange zest, gentle woody tones on the background. Water opens up sweet caramelly notes and amplifies wood.
Smaak:
Slightly sweet and quite punchy with peppery spicy side, oily, smoky (or rather ashy), creamy with milk chocolate motives, pear jam, some vanilla cake with citrus filling, peachy notes, caramelized lemon zest.
Afdronk:
Long, spicy, sooty, apple mash, vanilla custard, ending with soft oak.
Conclusie:
A very good dram as for 5 yo expression. Noticeably young but without inherent to young whiskies disadvantages. Very well balanced and very mild on smoke, especially on the nose - creamy and fruity, almost floral. An excellent introduction to the older Ardbeg releases.
