Laphroaig Lp1 - Elements of Islay
Review by Elements of Islay
- Nose
Initially the whisky is quite shy, revealing hints of sweetness, but after a short time in the glass it roars into life. Layers of wood smoke, tar and peat appear with sweet spice and singed lemons.
- Palate
Sweet and honeyed to start, with oatcakes and melon, but then the smoke appears again: coal, beach bonfires, black pepper, black cardamom and rich earth. Water softens the smoke and reveals a core of brown-sugar sweetness.
- Finish
Waves of smoke.

-
Famed for making pungently medicinal whisky, this south-coast distillery is far from a one-trick pony. It’s not all about iodine, and for Lp1 we carefully married a handful of casks from a single late-1990s vintage to focus on different types of smokiness.
