Oban 32 year old 1969
Review by Oban
- Nose
Sweet, sandy. A walk on the beach. Begins somewhat vegetal, with a faint smokiness. Then becomes more fruity (fresh, even citric) and sweet (iced caramels), the phenols becoming medicinal. Water introduces fresh plastic (new lunch-box), and the fruitiness becomes more like glacé fruits; slightly waxy.
- Palate
Silky, teasing. Tightly combined flavours. Oily creaminess. Sweet, edible seaweed - sweet, then very salty. Some acidity, but the overall impression is of fresh sweetness.
- Finish
Surprisingly assertive. A dryish finish. Sandy - almost gritty. Stinging and salty. Perhaps a hint of toasty smoke in the aftertaste, but very slight.
- Note
-
A stylish and complex Oban, surprisingly sprightly for its years. Greeny-gold in colour. Medium bodied, soft, oily and soothing with pleasant viscosity. Starts vegetal and smoky, then quickly becomes sweet, fresh and pleasing, and more assertive as the sea-breezes stiffen.
